Cox Communications planning Wireless Service using 700MHz spectrum

by admin on Aug.22, 2008, under Cox

Cox Communications looks set to be the next wireless telco in the US, after unveiling plans to consolidate their current cable media offerings into a mobile device and accompanying service.  The project will begin using the $304m-worth of 700MHz wireless spectrum which Cox bought earlier this year; the telco expects to spend a total of $500m on spectrum altogether, and describes its selling point as being a “differentiated product”.

“I won’t divulge too many secrets here, but we’ll focus on providing simple calling plans, integrating all our services into one device with a consistent cross-platform interface; and making our content and applications mobile” Patrick Esser, President, Cox Communications

While details on the system are scant, Esser confirmed that Cox are looking at using the tru2way interactive cable standard to deliver content onto mobile devices.  The company is one of six partners in tru2way, which describes a standard for video-on-demand, digital video recording and interactive programming guides that does not require a separate set-top box.

Cox will also introduce new functionality, including security applications, home health care, elderly monitoring and energy management.  No timescale for the wireless service’s rollout has been given.
