Motorola Droid goes official

Motorola and Verizon Wireless went all official this week with the new Droid handset. The device is very cool looking and has a nice large 3.7-inch 854 x 480 capacitive touchscreen. The handset will hit on November 6 for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate.

AT&T put the HTC Tilt 2 up for sale at $299.99. The second Windows Mobile 6.5 handset to be offered by AT&T after the Pure, the Tilt2 is available on a 2-year contract after a $50 mail-in rebate or $499.99 contract free.

KDDI shows prototype mobile phone fuel cell

KDDI used the CEATEC conference in Tokyo as a platform to show off its updated prototype methanol fuel cell-powered mobile phone. In addition to the methanol, the fuel cell includes a lithium ion battery to help the unit deal with surges in energy use.

The battery is optimized to offer users 320 hours of power, a significant increase over current standard battery capacities. Of course the main benefit of such a power source is that the methanol can instantly be refilled (as shown in the photo above) rather than waiting for a power outlet to gradually recharge your mobile phone. KDDI hopes to have a sellable version of this technology on the market within the next few years.

T-Mobile get Blackberry 9700 on November 11

T-Mobile USA’s next major BlackBerry release is the BlackBerry “Bold 9700,” or Onyx, and it will be the U.S. carrier’s very first 3G BlackBerry smartphone.

  • -Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
  • -UMTS/HSDPA
  • -480×360 resolution display (Bold 9000 has a 480 x 320; 9700 display should be the same or very similar to the screen on the Curve 8900)
  • -Wi-Fi a,b,g
  • -OS 5.0
  • -QWERTY keyboard
  • -3.2 megapixel AF camera
  • -Bluetooth

The device will also support UMA, or Wi-Fi calling, as part of T-Mobile’s HotSpot@Home service.

T-Mobile will be getting the 9700 on November 11 according to reports.

Dymo CardScan for Windows Mobile phones

Dymo has announced a new application for business users that have Windows Mobile phones with a 2MP camera inside.

The app is called Dymo CardScan Mobile and allows the user to snap a picture of a business card and the app automatically places all the content from the card into the contacts database of the mobile phone. This all happens without the need for a card scanner.

The application works only with  phones running Windows Mobile OS 6+ and with 2MP camera or more with autofocus. The application is available now for $14.99 and should be a fantastic help for the business user who collects lots of business cards.
