WATERLOO, Ont. — Research In Motion (TSX:RIM) is launching a BlackBerry desktop manager for Mac computers as it tries to forge a stronger position in a consumer market dominated by Apple’s iPhone.

RIM says the new software will allow Mac users to sync their contacts, calendar appointments, tasks and notes with their BlackBerry smartphones.

The move will also let Mac users sync their iTunes music collections with their BlackBerry.

The software is designed to run on Mac computers with Mac OS 10.5.5 and higher and supports smartphones running BlackBerry OS 4.2 and higher.

RIM says the software for Mac computers will be available for free download from the BlackBerry website on Friday.
